Senior Night

Volleyball   Wakefield and St Xavier at Goessel    September 30, 2014

On the final home stand of the season, Goessel’s senior volleyball players were recognized along with the parents of all members of both varsity and JV squads.   Seniors Chelsea Stika, Erin Brubaker, Gentry Thiesen, Makayla King, and Sarah Booth were presented  flowers and all given a round of applause for their many contributions to the program.

Goessel v. Wakefield

Only Little River is a further drive for Wakefield’s Bombers.     Goessel entertained the 2A northern tier Wheat State League squad after their 90 mile jaunt south.   After Junior Varsity contests with Wakefield and St. Xavier, Goessel took on the Bombers and prevailed 25-7, 25-7.    Goessel’s varsity did not play St. X.

Wakefield listed no one over 5’7” and earlier went three with St. Xavier.   Goessel jumped out to a 14-1 lead with Alyssa at the line shooting aces and Page hitting virtually unblocked from the left corner.   The Bombers struck back with two earned plunks.  Erin flamencoed one crosscourt to go up 22-5.  On a communication miscue in the middle, Wakefield got another and Goessel finished 25-7.

Alyssa started out from the line in the 2nd set and again rampaged to a 9-0 lead before the Bombers called time.  Olivia swooshed a pretty finish in the middle.   Brittney and Olivia down blocked.   Page recorded a total of 13 kills tonight.  Goessel was credited with 8 aces.   Out of the timeout the Bombers walloped one of their 2 earned points of the set.  At 14-3, Mak went to the line after an Alicen fresco in the middle and hit two aces, one that caromed almost up to the 16 on the scoreboard.  The Blue ran into an error streak letting the Bombers go to 7 but wrapped on an Erin tip, crosscourt zinger, pummel from Olivia and Erin’s harrumph left to close 25-7.   The two sets finished in an elapsed time less than it takes to get from Wakefield to Abilene’s Golden Arches.

Gentry Thiesen

Although Senior Gentry Thiesen may not be the superstar of the Bluebird squad, she might be considered the superglue.  Despite difficult family circumstances her freshman year, Gentry forged ahead and has demonstrated commitment in the face of adversity for four seasons of Bluebird volleyball.  Gentry will tell you that contributing to the team matters more to her than being the star.  Gentry is a formidable cheerleader/leader from the bench when she isn’t on the court; her forte is offering supportive and informational tidbits just before heading onto the court for warmup.   Gentry is studious, organized and thoughtful – life principles she is applying to her plans of pursuing pre-med studies.  Gentry loves to read and bake – perhaps you will have the opportunity to savor her crème brule.  Her all-around persona can dress up when she “just feels like it” but is happy to “rough it” in a tent on family camping excursions as well. She is able to bring much joy to younger siblings as well as her teammates.  Thank you Gentry for the many ways you have contributed and will continue to contribute to Bluebird volleyball!
