Bluebird Classic
Goessel Basketball – @ Goessel v. Canton-Galva Friday, December 13, 2024
Goessel’s guys’ basketball team fought hard against a young but very smooth Canton-Galva team. The Eagles’ height and size differential also played a role in the contest tonight, with the visitors winning inside scoring and rebounding battles on quick movement inside. Scoring was 17-48 at the half with a final of 33-73.
Senior Koy Smith and Sophomore Wyatt Sommerfield lead the team. Smith put the Bluebird on the board with a nifty finish at 4:00 to go to 2-9. Goessel battled on defense after a disastrous start. In the latter part of the stanza, he went to the line on a technical foul and hit both ends to stay at 4-14. Sommerfield will also be a key player for the Bluebirds and he coasted a very nice floater in to close the quarter 6-14. The cheer team kept the crowd in it and Brooklyn Wuest went south and north with spectacular flips! The second quarter, the Eagles turned on the wing power, going 34-11 with 6 made threes and many quick finishes off turnovers and steals. Goessel only mustered one field goal from Sommerfield and 9 free throws (Senior Jack Nickel was three for three and Sommerfield went 6 of 8) in the quarter and the half ended 17-48.
The Bluebirds continued to stay firm on defense and held the visitors to 11-17 in the third quarter. Goessel got a near perfect left handed lay in from Nickel off a spectacular blocked shot and down the floor pass from Sommerfield. Another finish from #32 left it at 23-59. Canton Galva cleared their bench at 3:30. Sophomore Brayton Base banked in a very very long two (almost made from the Hoopes Christmas display east of town) and fans could almost hear the cannon go off. The third quarter ended 28-65.
In the 4th , Freshman Kreed Smith set and delivered from somewhere close to the NFR Goessel site; this one also banked in, the 2nd such delivery of the night. The running clock 4th quarter went 5-8 and this one ended 33-73. Sommerfield led tonight with 13 including 6 made three throws, Nickel put up 8, Koy Smith had 4, Kreed Smith 3, Junior Trey Gaddis 3 and Brayton Base 2. Also in for Goessel were: Junior Samuel Zeni, Freshman AJ Hagewood, and Junior Evan Walker.
