Rural Vista Brings the Heat
Goessel Basketball – @ Goessel v. Rural Vista Thursday, February 20, 2025
Fans in Central Kansas have endured record-breaking low “high” temperatures the past few days. Tonight’s Bluebird performance left fans, players and coaches dissatisfied. It might have been the cold. Goessel could get no traction against the visiting Wheat State Rural Vista Heat, going 1-12 before you could say “Sobba.” The Heat brings 10 players on their roster 6’0” or more, most of whom see time, and are excellent ball handlers. Koy and Trey put the Blue on the board with a 1-2 from the line and a push inside in the trees to go to 3-12. Jack Nickel had a nice turn in the paint to ride to 5-16 and the first quarter closed at 5-22. The Heat were scoring most of their buckets in the paint. Goessel found Brayton Base on the cut for a nifty finish to stay at -24, but moments later it was 7-32 and Coach Guhr could be seen lamenting things just like Coach Self this year. To close the half, the Blue found a wide open Nickel underneath for the +1 and it was 11-32.
Coach Guhr played his bench a good piece of the 3rd quarter, and AJ Hagewood bounced perfectly to Kreed Smith for two. At 2:20, the starters were back in and Jack notched a near perfect post move to stalk to 15-45. With less than a minute left, Trey Gaddis let loose with a namesake that had so much finesse, it caused every member of the cheer team to jump spontaneously. Koy floated another two and Gaddis put up another long range flyer at the buzzer to get to 23-49. At 7:00, this one mercifully went into running clock 25-55 after Smith had bounced perfectly to Base back door, then Koy hit two on the break and Jack hit one FT to go to 28-55 but that’s all she wrote. This one ended at 28-61.
Gaddis and Nickel each had 8 for the Bluebirds. Koy Smith scored 5, Brayton Base 4, and Evan Walker 1, with Kreed Smith putting up 2. Also on the floor tonight for Goessel were: Evan Walker, Adam Wonser, AJ Hagewood, Wyatt Sommerfeld, and Samuel Zeni.
