Bluebirds Solid v Warriors
Goessel Basketball – @ Peabody v. Peabody Burns Warriors Monday, February 3, 2025
Goessel’s Bluebirds put together one of their best outings of the season at Peabody on an unusual game night: Monday. Needing to corral Sophomore Jameson Miles, the Bluebirds doubled and tripled Peabody’s key baller and held him to 15 on the night. Goessel was never behind in this one, going 13-8 in the first quarter, 11-6, then 18-9 in a superb third stanza and 17-11 to close this one out 59-34.
Koy Smith got it going with an excellent follow underneath 2-0, then Jack Nickel pushed inside, was fouled and hit both charities. Trey Gaddis plucked a steal and went coast to coast (“he doesn’t slow down”) for two more to lead 6-0 . At 3:22 it was 6-5 when Smith jiggled in a long trey, then bounced perfectly baseline to Base for a nifty two. Gaddis scored on yet another well executed drive and the quarter ended 13-8. Nikkel scored on a picture-perfect right roll reverse, then Sommerfeld put on a clinic with a jump stop/ball fake 17-8 followed by a runner and a leaping foray to the bucket to go to 21-12. Smith closed the quarter 24-14.
At 6:50 in the third, Smith slalomed one in from so deep the Peabody band played taps, then went in untouched for two more on a great reverse. It was soon 31-16 on a great step move inside from Nikkel and all was going well for Goessel as Gaddis forayed inside with a floating prayer. 33-19. Koy sat with three fouls at 3:41 but came back in at 2:26. Jack did what Jack does best; finish strong out of a scrum, then Base got a nice follow to drop. Jack got a fantastic block on Miles and Walker toasted one through the nylon at the buzzer to close the 18-9 third.
The action was fast and furious in the final quarter. Smith launched again from very near the cheer section for three 47-23. It was back and forth to 51-31 ; at 2:54 Jack was hit hard and had to sit. Shortly thereafter, subs were all in. Sommerfeld got two more buckets, Gaddis raced in for two more, and Kreed Smith got a bank to slither through to close this one out 59-34. Great effort Bluebirds!
Koy Smith led Bluebird scorers with 18, scoring in every quarter and notching three giant treys. Jack Nikkel put in a huge effort at both ends scoring 13, Trey Gaddis scored 10, and Wyatt Sommerfeld put up 10 including solid finishes tonight. Brayton Base scored 4 and Evan Walker & Kreed Smith finished with 2. Also in for Goessel were: Adam Wonser, Anthony Boden, Samuel Zeni, and AJ Hagewood.
