Homecoming: Win Streak Extended!
Goessel Basketball – @ Goessel v. Wakefield Friday, February 7, 2025
The Wakefield faithful put on a lot of miles following their teams in the Wheat State League. The Bombers
sported a 5-8 record coming into Goessel tonight and are led by Senior ball-handler Allison Adams and towering
Grace Rohrer and Paige Smith. It was homecoming night and Goessel’s girls, in front of a huge home crowd,
came ready to play. Ollllivviia Duerksen ! Goessel jumped out to a 12-0 lead on front court trapping pressure
and won every quarter tonight. Brooklyn Wuest led the way with 16, mostly on nicely executed post turns in
the paint. Abbigail Funk put up 10, with the only Bluebird trey of the night and went three for four at the line.
At Halftime it was 18-7 and the final was 34-19.
Brooklyn caught an in-pass against the 1-2-2- Bomber zone, turned and went off the glass for two to start. Off
front court pressure, the Blue were able to force numerous turnovers on good anticipation and traps. Aimee
was fouled on the break and converted one of two, then Brooklyn executed perfectly inside again with Abbigail
fouled on the steal again and hitting both ends to leave it at 12-0 before you could say “Blue Tutu in February.”
Abbigail hit the only long effort of the day for Goessel on a great inside/out throw from Logan – her shot hit
nothing but net from somewhere close to the Chet Roberts track. Down the floor after a Bomber timeout,
Logan Bryant threw a Mahomes (or Josh Allen, if you have to go there) dart to a streaking Wuest for a great
finish. 14-2. The quarter ended 14-5.
The visitors appeared to have figured out the offensive rotation and were shutting down the middle. Abbigail
was called for her third and had to sit most of the 2 nd quarter. Aimee drove hard to the hoop, was fouled, and
hit both charities. At 3:34 Coach Hoopes called time, as nothing was working on offense; excellent Bluebird
pressure on defense kept the Bombers grounded throughout the first half. Brooklyn finally got a hard push
inside to drop and Rohrer had one open look, converting off the glass as time ran down to close the 4-2 quarter
18-7 at the half.
Smith tallied a bucket and a charity to start and it was 18-10. On good ball movement, Goessel was able to get
it into Brooklyn for two and this one went to and fro until 4:15 when a foul was called on Abbigail despite her
being away from the play; it would have been her 4th. After a bench protest and New York review the foul
called was instead assessed on Logan although no one in the house was sure that was correct either. The
minor fracas was enough incentive to kick the Blue into high gear, with Abbigail getting loose for a smooth as
silk finish, then Delaney Duerksen laid in a beautiful back-door bounce finish from Isabelle Alderfer. Aimee
Funk blocked defensively, caught the carom, and went coast to coast with Duerksen for the layup and 6-0 run
to close the 8-5 3 rd quarter 26-12.
Goessel again used perimeter ball movement against the Bomber zone, looking for openings and sent both
Wuest and Abbigail Funk to the line. 29-16. Delaney was credited with a great stop on one Bomber
possession – Duerksen was given the defensive assignment on Adams, a very strong and stocky guard.
Goessel’s cheer team led the enthusiastic crowd in “Blue and White” at 4:52 during a Wakefield timeout. At
2:24, the Bluebirds were again able to get into Wuest in the post for another nice turn and finish and with 1:30
left on the clock, the Bluebirds were able to run “Money” to Abbigail for a final bucket off the glass to leave the
8-7 quarter at 34-19.
Goessel moves to 10-6 with the win and the Bluebirds have won their last 6. Wakefield moves to 5-9. Neither
team shot at a spectacular clip, with Goessel at 30% and Wakefield 22%. Free throws were 9-14 (64%) Goessel
and 7-15 (47%) Wakefield. Goessel made only 11 turnovers to the opponents’ 20 and the Bluebirds were
credited with 12 steals. Brooklyn Wuest led the Bluebirds with 16 points and 7 thunderous boards. Abbigail put
up 10 for Goessel including the only trey of the night for either team. Delaney Duerksen scored four, all in the
up-tempo third quarter run, and had three assists and three deflections. Aimee Funk put up three on 3/4 FT
shooting and had 5 huge steals. Isabelle Alderfer went 1 for 2 from the line and finished with 1. Also putting in
key minutes tonight were Logan Bryant (3 steals and tough defense), Hailey Rosfeld and Abigail Johnson (2
boards). A super start to Super Weekend.
