Senior Night
Goessel Basketball – @ Goessel v. Hartford Friday, February 21, 2025
1A Division II Hartford’s Lady Jaguars came in to Goessel tonight on Senior Night with a record of 13-5. With
only 8 on their roster, 4 are solid Senior ball players. It was a tussle all the way through the first half, with
Goessel’s quickness against the Jaguars’ height. The Bluebirds simply could not find the range in the paint
early and this one was at 13-21 at the half. Even to get to 13, Goessel needed a near perfect last second
prayer from Abbigail Funk with fans pretty sure her toe was on the center court Bluebird’s beak. Nothing but
net! Tough pressure defense from Goessel led to turnovers and the Bluebirds were able to handle the ball on
offense, keeping the visitors at bay to pull this one out 41-35.
This was a very satisfying win with congratulations to Goessel Seniors Aimee Funk, Logan Bryant, Adriana
Duerksen, Abbigail Funk, and Brooklyn Wuest. You all have contributed in huge ways to Goessel athletics and
to Lady Bluebird basketball.
Goessel will play their first round of sub-state on Monday night at home v. Allen – Northern Heights (0-18). NH
is part of the Lyon County League just like Hartford and possible next opponent Madison. Goessel goes into
post-season with a record of 13-7. Based on record Goessel was placed in the Little River side of the bracket
at the Canton sub-state. Goessel needed one more win and would not have been in that position but that was
not to be. Little River (17-0 at bracket time) is the #1 seed with Madison (12-7 at bracket time) getting the #4
seed. Goessel (11-7 at bracket time) gets the 5 seed. Rosalia – Flint Hills (13-5 at bracket time) #2 and Olpe
(12-7 at bracket time) get the #3 seed and are placed in a bracket apart from Litle River. If Goessel would get
past Northern Heights, Goessel would play Madison next at Madison with the winner very likely facing Little
River at Canton. The winner of that game goes to the 1A Div I State Tournament at Dodge City.
